Inspiring the Future of Medicine

This past spring, the Office of Community Service Programs (OCSP) was thrilled to connect P.S. 173 with the Black and Latino Student Organization (BALSO). The Black and Latino Students Organization’s Young Doctors Program is committed to supporting students from backgrounds historically underrepresented in medicine through outreach, education, and mentorship.

BALSO, a student organization of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, visited P.S. 173 through their Young Docs Program this spring. BALSO’s Young Docs has served the Washington Heights, Inwood, and Harlem communities for over nine years to expose youth to the health sciences and encourage an interest in medicine.

Seventy-two Pre-k students participated in a number of interactive, engaging, and fun activities with students from the medical school that focused on the digestive and the skeletal system. PS. 173 teacher, Sherry Wilson was thankful for the experience and believed the sentiment was shared shared by all of tof the pre-k teachesrs. She stated; "all of the medical students worked alongside our pre-k students, and taught them about the human body in fun, engaging, and age-appropriate activities. All of the activities were hands-on, and encouraged the students to engage in them using repetition and actions...we feel fortunate to have had Young Docs in our community."

“It’s truly a privilege to serve as role models for younger students. We hope to inspire the next generation to become leaders in their community, within healthcare, and beyond.”
