Chalk Food Insecurity Response to COVID-19

Since March 16th, 2020, NYP CHALK food insecurity initiatives have expanded to meet increasing need for emergency food resources in Northern Manhattan and the Bronx. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we served approximately 190 families monthly through our mobile market and farm share initiatives. Between March 16 – October 2, 2020, we have provided food to 1,821 families, with approximately 950 boxes of healthy groceries going out each month.

CURRENT INITIATIVES:

1. Food FARMacia mobile market with West Side Campaign Against Hunger

- Participants receive a monthly box of fresh fruits and vegetables, self-stable grain, protein, and milk
- Connection to virtual social services (SNAP enrollment, unemployment, education, and more)

2. Farm share with Corbin Hill Food Project

- Participants receive a monthly box of farm fresh produce, bread, eggs, yogurt, and dried beans

3. CBO-led mobile markets with Nido de Esperanza, Mexican Coalition, and Rena Day Care Centers
- Participants receive 2x monthly box of fresh produce, shelf-stable grain, protein, and milk

4. App-based cash incentive program – Wholesome Wave with Tangelo

- Participants receive $60/month to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables delivered to their homes

Families experiencing food insecurity are referred to these programs by NYP Division of Community & Population Health programs, NYP ACN & CUIMC healthcare teams, and NYP CHALK community partners (CBOs, NYC public schools, and early childhood centers). Deliveries are provided for immunocompromised patients and community members.
